    Position Description


    Our aim is to recruit and support a scholar in a 12-month professional practice position focused on swine production. This is a non-tenure track, multi-year appointment eligible for renewal. The ideal candidate will establish an innovative teaching program to deliver animal sciences subject content at the introductory, intermediate, and/or upper level. Specific course assignments will vary depending on the needs of the department, but the successful candidate will have a deep understanding of the swine industry and will teach an advanced course on swine production. Additional teaching responsibilities will depend on departmental needs. The successful candidate will also be expected to adapt teaching methods to the needs of diverse learners and use existing and new technologies to deliver subject matter through both in-person and virtual formats.  The range of duties will include contact hours with students in class, recitation, and/or laboratories, and additional commitment to course preparation, student office hours, team meetings, grading, etc. In addition, the successful candidate will be involved with Extension programming by developing outreach events targeted to the swine industry as well as youth. Specifically, this could include working in collaboration with the existing educational, research, and Extension teams at the Ohio State University and/or through strategic partnerships with stakeholders and allied industry groups in the state of Ohio and nationally.


    The incumbent will become an integral part of the undergraduate program of Animal Sciences. Expertise in teaching courses in swine production would be favorable, and the successful candidate will be expected to advise undergraduate students in academic and career planning. Faculty members have a shared responsibility to support and sustain the CFAES Principles of Community, convey good citizenship, and interact collegially.     Performance Objectives



    • Advance the practice of teaching through scholarship.

    • Contribute to the Department’s academic mission through the teaching of up to 15 credit hours of undergraduate courses per year.

    • Advise undergraduate students.

    • Work collaboratively with faculty and staff in Extension programming, including youth Extension programs.

    • Demonstrate an ability to cultivate learning environments that are equitable and inclusive of students with diverse social identities and backgrounds, and commitment to enhancing diversity and inclusion within Animal Sciences and related professions.

    • Work collaboratively with university faculty, staff, and students to advance the land grant mission of the college and university.

    • Serve the department, college, university, and professional communities through committee work and other appropriate responsibilities and activities.


    Education and Experience Requirements


    Required:



    • D. in animal sciences, biology, or a related discipline.

    • Evidence of effective teaching practices.

    • Ability to teach within the broad disciplines of animal sciences including growth, development, physiology, nutrition, genetics, and behavior.

    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills and a willingness and ability to work closely with diverse groups of academic (e.g., students, staff, faculty) and industry audiences.

    • Demonstrated interest in and/or experience with teaching, recruiting, mentoring, and advising diverse underserved students including women, students of color, first generation, and non-traditional students.


    Desired:



    • Experience or experiential learning in the swine industry.

    • Evidence of collaboration with the swine industry.

    • Evidence of effective collaboration and leadership with Extension programming.

    Department/School Information


    The Department of Animal Sciences is based on two campuses in Ohio: one in Columbus and the other in Wooster. There are 35 faculty and 85 staff that deliver the research, teaching, and Extension programs of the department. Approximately 530 undergraduate students and 45 graduate students are enrolled. Undergraduate students can choose from seven Animal Sciences minors and three major degree specializations including Animal Biosciences, Animal Industries, and Veterinary Technology. The Department offers a robust graduate program that awards MS and PhD degrees. The Department aims to increase the economic profitability of agricultural animals and the quality of their products through the departments priority areas that include: 1) Nutrition and the Microbiomes, 2) Growth and Development, 3) Health and Disease, and 4) Welfare and Human-Animal Interactions. Herds and flocks of major food-producing animals for experimental studies are maintained across both campuses and statewide. Excellent opportunities are available for collaboration with food, veterinary, medical, animal and plant scientists on the Wooster and Columbus campuses.
