    POSITION VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT

This is a grant-funded, non-tenure track position.  The position is funded through 9/30/2025 with possible annual renewal for an additional 4 years.

Work Location:  Department of Entomology, Life Sciences Building, LSU, Baton Rouge, LA 70803

Position Description: The individual will be expected to perform a variety of duties as an extension associate in the Department of Entomology in coordination with the USDA-ARS Honey Bee Breeding, Genetics and Physiology Research Laboratory (HBBGPRL).  These duties will include conducting field assessments of local and commercial beekeeping operations (requires local, regional and national travel); assisting with outreach and extension efforts (e.g. development of workshop and extension materials, participating in workshop instruction, supporting survey assessments); sampling honey bee colonies; and collecting and computerizing research data. Additional duties will be concordant with expertise and may include conducting basic science laboratory techniques, such as established molecular and organismal biology methods (e.g. DNA and RNA extractions, ecotoxicology assays), microscopy, and managing research honey bee colonies.  Current projects would require the successful applicant to coordinate work as part of a team of extension technicians, field technicians, and researchers at the USDA-ARS HBBGPRL, beekeepers, and related units in joint tasks when deemed necessary.

Qualification Requirements:  A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in the entomology, biology, genetics or related fields. If the candidate possesses sufficient relevant experience with honey bees, then the field of degree could be outside of those listed. Preference will be given to applicants with prior experience working with honey bees or insects in general and the beekeeping community.  Preference will also be given to candidates with additional training in basic sciences like molecular biology, entomology, microscopy, and/or field work.

Salary and Benefits: Salary will be commensurate with education and experience.  The LSU AgCenter has an attractive benefits package with a wide variety of benefit options. Current benefits offered include retirement, multiple medical insurance options, supplemental insurances (dental, life, long-term disability, accident, vision, long-term care, etc.), Tax Saver Flexible Benefits Plan (saves tax dollars on some child care and medical expenses), university holidays (14 per year, typically includes a week off at Christmas), generous annual (vacation) and sick leave benefits, Employee Assistance Program, and possible educational leave and tuition exemption for coursework at campuses of the LSU System.  Specific benefits depend on job category, percent effort and length of employment.

Date Available:  Upon completion of the selection process. Start date negotiable.

Application Deadline: October 18, 2024 or until suitable candidates are identified.
