    Job Description


    United Arab Emirates University invites applications for the position of Dean, College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine (CAVM).


    United Arab Emirates University is the principal university of the UAE. It was the first federal university to be founded (in 1976) and is therefore approaching its 50th anniversary. UAEU remains the only fully comprehensive university in the UAE. It is situated in the historic city of Al Ain, which is about 100km inland from both Abu Dhabi and Dubai. UAEU is in the process of transitioning into a research-intensive institution to be fit for its second half-century. It enrolls approximately 14,000 students, with a growing international student body. As UAE’s flagship university, it offers a full range of accredited, high-quality graduate and undergraduate programs through its nine colleges.


    The College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine was established in 1980-1981 and has earned a strong reputation for excellence in teaching and research. The College has three departments: Integrative Agriculture, Food Science, and Veterinary Medicine, each offering a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The College employs an outstanding team of international faculty, who are recognized nationally and internationally for their contributions to research, innovation, and education. The College has an Al Foah Experimental Farm spanning 40 hectares of land and a range of cutting-edge research facilities that support a wide spectrum of research activities, most of which focus on the development of sustainable plant and animal production systems that yield healthy produce. Notably, the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine is the only College in UAE to grant a Bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Medicine. CAVM currently has 543enrolled students, about 20% of which are in the veterinary medicine program.


    The position of Dean provides an outstanding opportunity to lead the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine with a futuristic vision to make a positive impact on the College, the University, and the UAE. The Dean will lead an ambitious reorganization of the College aiming to reflect the vision of the UAE government for the next 50 years of the country's progress and to advance higher education in agriculture and veterinary medicine to address the rapidly evolving job market needs in these rapidly evolving industries. Although we are particularly interested in recruiting someone with experience in building up Veterinary Medicine, but applicants from all relevant disciplines will be treated equally.


    The anticipated start date is 1st Aug 2023.


     


    Responsibilities


    The Dean of the College of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine reports to the Provost and has overall responsibility for academic leadership and administration of the College. Most importantly s/he sets the strategic direction for the College and ensures that this is aligned with the plans of the University.


    The Dean manages administrative functions of the College; develops College strategic initiatives and participates in university long-term planning and policy setting; provides senior-level administrative leadership in areas of curriculum development, faculty academic affairs, students’ life, institutional assessment and improvement, human resource, faculty evaluation, promotion, career development; manages and facilitates the growth of research and development programs; develops and manages the College budget and finances; coordinates with facilities planning and management; cultivates partnerships with industry, foundations, and government organizations; leads College fundraising and cultivates relationships with donors.


     


    Compensation


    The position carries a tax-free salary commensurate with experience, as well as housing, health insurance, annual air tickets, educational allowance (if applicable), and end-of-service compensation.


    Qualifications


    The ideal candidate will be a collaborative leader with a clear vision for the future of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine institutions and professions in the UAE and beyond. He/she should have a demonstrable commitment to research and teaching excellence. He/she should be committed to equity and inclusion across all areas of university and college business, with sensitivity to cultural differences, and have a proven record of success as an academic administrator. The minimum qualifications for this position include:



    • A Ph.D. degree in Agricultural Sciences or Veterinary Medicine. Preference will be given to candidates with education from pre-eminent institutions of higher education

    • Full Professor with a minimum of 15 years of responsible education-related experience including 5 years of academic leadership in higher education, in a research intensive institution

    • Strong track record of research, research funding raising, publications, and citations

    • Strong track record in teaching reflecting academic excellence

    • Proven record of professional accomplishments and effective leadership

    • Ability to build collaborations and partnerships with industry and other top universities globally.

    • Demonstrable success in the acquisition of external funding and development of community relationships
