The Department of Forestry, Wildlife and Fisheries at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville invites applications for a 12-month tenure-track faculty position as an Assistant Professor of Biometry (75% teaching, 25% research). The individual must be committed to excellence in teaching and have a strong interest in mentoring undergraduate and graduate students. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing a nationally recognized and independent research program capable of attracting graduate students and external funding in their area of expertise. It is also expected that the candidate will provide statistical and modeling guidance to graduate students and faculty in the department through collaborative research.
The individual is expected to instruct the following undergraduate courses on an annual basis: FORS 329 Forest Resource Inventory; FWF 313 Measurements and Sampling; and FWF 430 Introduction to GIS for Natural Resources. In addition, it is expected the individual will teach FWF 525 Applied Natural Resource Statistics at least every two years, and assist with the departmental capstone course FWF 416 Planning and Management of Forest, Wildlife and Fisheries Resources.
Evidence of research productivity in forest/natural resource biometrics or other applied quantitative disciplines, such as peer-refereed publications or other research deliverables, is required. Potential fields of research include, but are not limited to: statistics, spatial analysis of natural resources, modeling, sampling and inventory, forest or ecosystem processes, and demographic analysis of forest and wildlife populations. The candidate’s expertise should be unique yet complement the department’s existing teaching and research programs.
Candidates must be committed to collaborating with diverse groups within and outside of the university including students, faculty, state and federal agencies, non-government organizations, agricultural and forest producers, natural resource groups, and other private sector entities. The successful candidate will be expected to secure extramural funding, publish in the peer-refereed literature, advise undergraduate students, direct graduate students in research, serve on departmental committees, and participate in professional societies.
Required Qualifications: Ph.D. in biometry or a related field.
Additional Desired Qualifications: It is preferred that candidates have at least one degree in Forestry from a SAF-accredited program. Demonstrated experience in field-based natural resource inventory practices is desired. Post-doctoral and teaching experience is also preferred.
