The CAES seeks a dynamic leader and scholar to serve in this critical role and continue the upward trajectory of this flourishing and highly visible department. The ideal candidate is a compelling, outward-facing leader with exceptional communication skills who delivers a hands-on approach to leadership, recruitment, program and partnership development, and mentorship and will interface seamlessly with all constituents related to this position including administration, faculty, students, parents, farmers and those in limited resource communities. The successful candidate brings strong teaching, research and extension experience; understands land-grant institutions and the communities they serve; and appreciates the interconnectivity of animal reproduction to the larger scope of agriculture and the environment.
This role is excellent for a person seeking to be a part of a growing academic enterprise on the cutting edge of discovery, learning, and engagement. The Chair shall provide innovative leadership to build upon the excellent research and educational activities within the department.
The primary responsibilities of the position include: academic leadership; fund raising; enhancement of relations with alumni, government and industrial partners; student recruitment, retention, enrollment growth, curriculum planning and administrative oversight and direction.
Launching Spring 2022 is the new Doctor of Philosophy in Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Concentration. The Sustainable Animal Production and Health area is designed to give doctoral candidates an in-depth look at the challenges facing the animal industry and equip them with the appropriate tools to answer and research questions related to the fields of sustainable animal production and animal health. This program offers guidance in conducting interdisciplinary research including but not limited to genetics, nutrition, and physiology, and access to a diverse array of animal species. The goal of the program is to assist future professionals and scientists to develop capabilities in assessing and conducting valid scientific research and practices that facilitate sustainable food production and promote preventative animal health through an in-depth understanding of agriculture and environmental systems use of interdisciplinary approaches.
The Chairperson is a 12-month position that reports directly to the Dean, the chief administrative officer for CAES.

About the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (CAES):
CAES offers 9 BS degrees, 3 MS degrees and 1 PhD and educates nearly 1100 students. BS degrees include: Agricultural and Environmental Systems, Agricultural Education, Animal Science, Biological Engineering, Child Development and Family Studies, Family and Consumer Sciences, Food and Nutritional Sciences, Laboratory Animal Science and Landscape Architecture. MS programs include: Agricultural Education, Agricultural and Environmental Systems and Food and Nutritional Sciences. The CAES was recently approved for a PhD in Agriculture and Environmental Sciences with an animal science specialization track.
About the Department of Animal Sciences:
The Department of Animal Sciences is housed in a 64,000 square foot, 2 story facility. It accommodates modern instructional classrooms, teaching laboratories and faculty research laboratories. The first floor includes a 12,000 square foot environmentally controlled laboratory animal resource unit. The Department offers a Bachelor of Science Degrees in Animal Science, Animal Science (Animal Industry concentration), and Laboratory Animal Science and two graduate programs: Master of Science in Agricultural and Environmental Systems, with a concentration in Integrated Animal Health Systems and the soon to be launched Ph.D. in Agricultural and Environmental Systems, Animal Sciences concentration. The department’s instruction and research are supported by excellent beef, poultry, swine, dairy, small ruminants, and equine facilities at the university farm. These extended laboratory opportunities, located as part of the University’s farm complex, help to further enhance research capabilities and practical demonstrations for agricultural teaching, research and extension activities. The Department of Animal Sciences produces the second highest number of African Americans that go on to pursue the D.V.M in the United States. The department also has one the highest student first-year retention rates on campus, displaying the importance placed upon student success.

Required Qualifications:
- PhD or equivalent terminal degree (Ph.D or DVM+MS) in animal science or a closely related field
- Minimum of six years of demonstrated excellence in teaching and creative/research activities consistent with eligibility for appointment at the rank of associate professor or full professor
- Administrative experience relevant to the position
- Service-oriented leadership style
- Excellent people skills and the ability to motivate faculty, staff and students toward shared goals
- Appreciation of the land-grant philosophy
Preferred Qualifications:
- Training and experience in reproductive physiology of food animals is also a plus.
- Experience in community outreach such as recruiting students and assistance to farming communities
