Trophoblast cells are important for normal placental growth and development. Aberrant trophoblast functioning is associated with poor placentation influencing fetal health. The focus of our laboratory has been in the molecular signaling of trophoblast cells during apoptosis, hypoxia and the regulation of cell invasion during pregnancies complicated with Intrauterine Growth Restriction, Preterm Delivery and Preeclampsia. We are also interested in the role of the mTOR family of proteins in placental and trophoblast development, invasion and functioning across gestation during these diseases.
