My training and interests are in marine biology and ecology. My research explores two broad areas. First, I study the responses of animals to environmental changes caused by humans (climate change, habitat destruction, invasive species, pollution, etc.). This includes behavioral and physiological responses of individual animals, as well as extinction of populations. Second, I study the role of individual variation within populations, such as differences in animal personality and differences in energetics, and how this individual variation influences population and community interactions. My research uses a wide range of animals in freshwater and marine habitats, including zooplankton, crabs, shrimp, and polar bears. My work also includes a wide range of approaches, from field and laboratory experiments, to physiological analyses, to computer simulation and mathematical modeling.
