Much of Patrick’s current research is in the domain of precision agriculture, and consists of several disciplines, involving agronomy, soil science, GIS, modelling, and data science. He has a strong focus on the cotton industry, and his current position is funded by the Cotton Research Development Corporation (CRDC). In particular, he is concentrated on understanding yield variability in cotton systems, and the causes of this variability. This work also involves modelling and forecasting crop yield at the within-field scale. All of this work is centred on ‘Big Data’, and focuses on utilising the wealth of on-farm and public data that is available today. This data is processed using intelligent feature extraction, and then combined with advanced modelling techniques. Patrick is passionate about delivering the outcomes of his research in a simple and achievable format to growers.
