  • I am interested in understanding the molecular basis of tissue-development and cell fate in different animal models aimed to solve Translational Medicine problems. The external molecular cues that lead the transition between cell-quiescence, self-renewal, differentiation, senescence or death are essential in normal development. In this process growth factors and their receptors play an important role and they induce epigenetic modifications engaging inheritable RNAs (such as microRNAs). I am currently using trans-generational epigenetic models based on microRNAs which target Receptor Tyrosine Kinases (RTK)activity and their signal-transduction mechanisms in mesodermal tissues (muscle, endothelia). Amongst the RTKs, the receptors of Insulin-Like-Growth Factors (IGF-IR and -II) and Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (VEGF-R) are the main focus of my projects. The latest results of my research show that variations in IGF and VEGF levels play a capital role in cell-fate determination during environmental insults with epigenetic impact (nutrition, drought, dehydration, etc.). My research is aimed to create new tissue regeneration therapies and discover bio-markers for inheritable epigenetic diseases.
